Seasonal subsistencing in Scammon

Every season brings in a new subsistence activity. At this time we are busy picking salmon berries. Every household picks about 40-50 gallons per year to last throughout the winter. Salmonberries are mostly picked and used in akutaq (eskimo icecream).

I didn't know much about salmonberries until I visited King Salmon and had the opportunity to pick some. They were delicious. Unfortunately, they don't grow much around Fairbanks--lots of respberries, blueberries, and cranberries, though.

I have never had eskimo icecream. Sounds like an adventure.

I love your picture! We have to really look for Salmonberries at Russian Mission but there are some within boating distance. We try to get to the known patches before others finish them :P.
